If you are getting up in age, and are looking for a safe, relaxing place in the sun with good food and accommodations then Huatulco is the place to come. For younger kids, other than the beach, the activities are very limited. Those that do exist you really have to look for to find them.
Some of the beaches are spectacular. Playa Cacaluta, for one, was pristine with no development and reachable only by boat or by dune buggy through the natural park forest. The water was clear, the waves fun to play in. Snorkeling in general was pretty good, but nothing compared to Roatan or Costa Rica.
The highlight for me had to be the morning I spend on the ocean with my nephew Taylor fishing. Seeing a killer whale, sting rays flying out of the water in groups, bottlenose dolphins performing as if at Sea World, a flotilla of small jellyfish, a huge Eagle Ray gliding under our boat, catching (and losing a couple) a Maui Maui fish and flocks of brown pelicans diving for fish made for a memorable experience. At one point I laid on the front of the boat with my head over the water as the dolphins swam and jumped right under my nose.
The kids still are participating in their schooling. Kate complains about Math and French, “They are boring!” We are currently reading the Outsiders in Reading class and they are really enjoying it. They laugh when I tear up reading the emotional parts. I see progress in Tom’s writing if he stops to check his work.
My sister Margaret, her husband Les and their kids made this part of the trip special. It was good to spend quality time with all of them. We often spent the day at the beach with them, or joined them in some of the outing like dune buggies or a boat tour of the bays. Margaret and I also got to spend some time painting. I enjoyed getting the paints out, and will continue doing that on a regular basis as we travel.
Our trip to Mendoza is a long one. We leave our condo unit at 1:00 p.m. today and will likely arrive at our one in Mendoza 21 hours later. Flying time is about 11 hours in total, so lots of time getting to and waiting at airports. The longest flight is just over 8 and ½ hours from Mexico City to Santiago, Chile. Argentina is 3 hours ahead of Mexico, so we will have to adjust our internal clocks.
