Huatulco - Day 10

We are enjoying our stay here. Sunday we all went to a beach (Playa) called La Entregra. It is a short cab ride from our place. The kids took the boogie boards and we all took our snorkel equipment. We sat close to the beach under the shade and drank beer between our dips into the ocean. The water was pretty clear and it was a good place for snorkelling.

There was local celebration going on at the beach, so it crowded with lots of people. There was Mexican music was playing loudly and the announcer seemed excited about something. Near the end of the day, they had a greased pole climbing competition. The pole was about 30 feet tall and tied to the top were prizes, like a bike, or a blender, or an air conditioning unit. Teams each had five persons. They would stand on each other’s shoulders while hanging onto the greased pole for support trying to get the 5th person as high as they could. If the 5th man was able to make it to the top of all the shoulders, he then had to shinny up the remaining few feet of the greased pole. Inevitably, someone was a weak link in the stack, and all would come down. I’ve included a video and some pictures of it. My nephews and my niece would encouraged to enter the contest by one of the locals with his two sons, but the registration had already closed by the time they got organized. We never did see anyone succeed at getting to the prizes.

On Monday we rented a boat and did tours of the Bays of Huatulco. There were 10 of us (11 if you count our driver/guide) and we left at 9:30 a.m. in the morning and returned around 4:00 p.m. The boat had a canopy on it and the sky was slightly cloudy which kept us cool. We trolled for fished as we went along, and we all got a turn bringing a fish into the boat. The fish we caught were black tunas referred to here as Bonitos. You would see them jumping in the water near the boat and the next minute they were on the line. Kate and Tom really enjoyed wheeling their fish in.

We stopped at St. Augustine Bay, had lunch on the beach at one of the many local restaurants that dot the beaches and then went snorkelling. The snorkelling was the best I have experienced in Huatulco. We swam over a school of shimmering silver fish that were all about eight inches long with big glassy eyes. There must have been a million of them. When you swam down into them it was a similar feeling of seeing large snowflakes in you car lights as you drive down the road at night. Yesterday was a rest day.

I was feeling a little under the weather, and spend most of the day on the couch or in bed. I feel better this morning, so I sure it was just something I ate that didn’t quite sit right. The rest of the family is healthy. Hope all is well where you are. Bye for now. Ian
